Description: : The aim of the course is to give a general overview and understanding of the methods and applications of modern imaging technologies exploited in basic and translational research. The students will get acquainted with the various methodologies related to in vitro and in vivo imaging, and how these technologies can be utilized in areas such as cell and developmental biology, neuroscience, cancer research, and pharmacodynamic research.

Immunological Methods: Basic microscopy and Confocal microscopy

Description: The light microscopy part of the Immunological methods course for HBGP students is composed of two lectures and a demonstration. The lectures deal with the basic principles and the applications of widefield and confocal fluorescent microscopy. In the demonstration the students learn to acquire 3D Z-stacks with a confocal microscope.

BIU: Fluorescence Microscopy and Quantitative Imaging

Description: The course will consist of a day of lectures on the principles of microscopy (open to all) to be followed by a microscopy and data analysis workshop. The course participants will get hands on experience in the use of widefield and confocal fluorescence microscopes; acquiring multichannel 3D image stacks of immunofluorescently labelled cells and whole mount tissues. Visualization and analysis of the data sets acquired will be performed in collaboration with Bitplane Scientific Software AG, using the image processing and visualization packages from Imaris. Course participants will also get a general introduction to the open source image processing software ImageJ/FIJI, in an interactive tutorial session. In this course emphasis will be placed on the use of image processing, visualization and analysis tools through the quantitative evaluation of relevant and ongoing research problems in the fields of cancer biology and lipid trafficking.
In total there will be 5 hrs of lectures and 10.5 hrs of practical work.

Description: The aim of the course is to give a general overview and basic understanding of the methods and applications of pre-clinical in vivo imaging.The topics of the lectures and practical demonstrations span from imaging of individual cells, tissues, embryos and model organisms, to whole organs and animals, including drug targeting. The students will get acquainted with the various methodologies related to in-vivo imaging, and how these technologies are exploited in areas of neurobiology and stroke research, oncology, and pharmacodynamic research.

2010

BIU 1st Imaging Workshop:Practical Microscopy and Image Analysis

Location: Biomedicum, Haartmaninkatu 8, Helsinki
Organisers:Biomedicum Imaging Unit (BIU) and the Helsinki Biomedical Graduate School (HBGS)
Description: The workshop is to be run from 15.11 - 19.11.2010. The workshop will consist of a day of lectures (open to all) to be followed by microscopy and data analysis practicals. The workshop participants will get hands on experience in the use of widefield and confocal fluorescence microscopes by acquiring images of self-prepared immunofluorescently stained cell samples. Visualization and analysis of the data sets acquired will be performed using the image processing packages ImageJ, CellProfiler and MatLab. Emphasis will be placed on the use of image processing and analysis tools by addressing a practical biological problem.
In total there will be 10 hrs of lectures and 16 hrs of practical work.
